The U.Va. Health System this year extended its dedication to patient care on many levels, from lab bench research breakthroughs to state-of-the-art new facilities and treatments, to patient outreach; from South Africa to Southwest Virginia to a Charlottesville assisted living facility.
The University of Virginia administration focused some of its attention in 2011 on the working environment for staff and faculty. One of several incentives for employees, the Hoo's Well@ U.Va. program helped put employees on the wellness track.
It was a tumultuous, fascinating year, with the birth of the Arab Spring; the devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant crisis in Japan; famine and unrest in the Horn of Africa; and growing concern that Iran harbors nuclear weapons ambitions. U.Va. students were able to assess and discuss these evolving world events in real time.
In 2011, the University of Virginia community lost some beloved faculty members, respected staff and two students, among others. UVA Today pays tribute to these people who were part of the U.Va. experience.
