Philanthropy is not just an activity of the well-to-do in the United States, Olivier Zunz, a U.Va. history professor concludes in his new book, "Philanthropy in America: A History." In the book, he also examines the relationship between philanthropy and politics, the professionalism of fundraising and the creation of the non-profit sector.
Since the 2010 census, Virginia's population grew by 1.2 percent, to 8.1 million residents as of July 1, 2011, according to the most recent official population estimates for the state developed by demographers from U.Va.'s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. The commonwealth's growth outpaced the nation's, with nearly all of the growth since 2010 occurring in or near cities.
In 2007, U.Va. entered into an innovative partnership with the British-based company Rolls-Royce. The School of Engineering and Applied Science is today reaping benefits from that partnership, which enabled U.Va. to attract more than $8 million in external research funding.
The University of Virginia Library's Digital Media Lab will host an open house tomorrow for faculty interested in learning to create and use digital media for teaching and research. The event will begin at 3 p.m. on the third floor of Clemons Library.
