In the immediate wake of fourth-year student Yeardley Love's death in May 2010, a shocked U.Va. community mourned the loss of one of its own. In the 21 months since, that mourning has evolved into sustained efforts to increase student safety and encourage open communication among students, staff and faculty.

U.Va.'s College at Wise is mourning the unexpected death of David J. Prior, the College's seventh chancellor. Prior, 68, died Thursday. "His many contributions to our college, our region and our students will continue to impact the campus for years to come," said Marcia Adams-Gilliam, chair of the U.Va.-Wise Board.

Adam Maguire, a first-year student in U.Va.'s School of Engineering and Applied Science, and his classmates in "Introduction to Engineering" have built a prototype of a device that will enable people with limited or no use of their limbs to operate a computer using their tongues.

A sheepskin diploma from the Class of '52 -- that's 1852 -- is one of several items featured in an online auction of U.Va. memorabilia helping to fuel a fundraiser to benefit the restoration of the Rotunda. The face behind the project is third-year student Whit Hunter, who grew up in Charlottesville attending U.Va. football games, watching his father teach and his siblings learn at U.Va.
